According to the Presidential Administration, the European Council agenda includes topics such as: Ukraine, migration, the situation in the Middle East, the EU’s civil and military preparedness and response to crises, the EU’s role in the world and the enlargement of the Union, the Republic of Moldova, Georgia and issues related to freedom, security and justice.
The European leaders’ discussion on Ukraine aims to analyze the situation on the ground and the most appropriate ways to fulfill the commitments to support the Ukrainian people and to continue the efforts necessary to repel the Russian invasion and ensure the prevalence of international law. This meeting will also be a good opportunity to express a unified message of support for Ukraine and for the implementation of a just, comprehensive and lasting peace, at the European level, the same source reads.
President Iohannis will highlight the need to continue a strategic, multidimensional and coherent approach in support of Ukraine.
Regarding the EU’s role in the world, a strategic and comprehensive discussion is aimed at the way forward in terms of global engagement and priorities in a multipolar context marked by geopolitical tensions.
The topic of migration will be approached from the perspective of assessing the progress made in implementing EU legislation on the matter, with a focus on the external dimension, preventing and combating illegal migration, and the fight against the instrumentalization and trafficking of migrants.
Regarding developments in the Middle East, the situation on the ground will be analyzed, including the ways in which the EU can contribute to efforts to de-escalate the conflict. The situation in Syria will also be addressed.
The President will also inform the members of the European Council about the situation in Romania following foreign interference in the electoral process.
„I will emphasise that this is not a threat only to Romania, but to democracies and European values, in the most general way. All, I repeat, all countries are exposed to this risk. It is obvious, and I will say this at the meeting as well, that efficient coordination is necessary at the level of the entire Union on combating foreign interference and hybrid attacks from Russia. In order to defend ourselves and prevent these interferences, we must urgently adapt and develop instruments and mechanisms, we cannot just stay at the level of ‘let’s discuss how to solve it’, we must go much further. Concrete instruments, correct procedures, the necessary mechanisms must be found to be able to defend ourselves against these attacks,” said president Klaus Iohannis, on Wednesday, in a press conference held in Brussels.
